Kalimpong - The City of Flowers in Darjeeling Hills

Placed at the height of 4,100 ft of the Himalayas, with its friendly weather Kalimpong can be visited anytime during the year. This peaceful city of flower once overshadowed by Darjeeling is now one of the most desired destinations in Eastern Himalayas for nature lovers, holiday tourists or the people who want to enjoy a peaceful holiday.Once the headquarters of  Bhutanese Governor, it was a bustling town situated on the main trade route between India and Tibet. The word “ Kalim” means King’s Minister and  “Pong” stands for “ The stronghold of the King’s Minister”. It is also called “ Kalimbong” or the black spur by the hill people. Kalimpong was conquered by Bhutan in 1706 from Sikkim. And after Anglo-Bhutan war in 1865 the British Government took control over it.

Kalimpong is enriched with Alpine Forests, numerous species of   Flowering Plants and Orchids. Number of  flower nurseries are present in this town producing flower & orchids for export and domestic markets. Though quite off the beaten track is an ideal setting for a peaceful holiday, British architecture feast for the eyes! Gangtok - Capital of Sikkim

Gangtok is accessible from Siliguri by road only & situated at an altitude of 5,047 ft.  Its 125 kms and 3 ½ hrs journey. Journey to Gangtok is really beautiful through straightway and very few ups & downs or zigzags  accompanying by river Teesta more than halfway. It’s an interesting road. You simply penetrate those hills and feel the changes of characters of the hills. Gangtok nestling in the lush greenery of the Himalayas is the small capital city of  Sikkim, where Buddhist prayer flags flutter in the mountain breeze, exotic orchids and chirruping birds run riot in a colorful melee. Visit Gangtok for a peek at the profusion of blooming rhododendrons in the deepest of reds and savour the serene cool beauty of the snow clad peaks in an ambience enhanced by the cheerful bustle of a warm, hospitable, pleasant and hard-working people. Darjeeling - Queen of Himalaya

Till the early eighteenth century the Kind of  Sikkim ruled Darjeeling and lost Darjeeling to the Gorkhas. Later British invaded Darjeeling and made the city their Summer Capital and developed Darjeeling as a major tourist spot in Himalaya and hub of the finest tea production centre in the world. Ultimately Darjeeling has become the "Queen of the Himalaya's ". Darjeeling is thought to be derived from the word Dorjeeling, which literally means 'the place of Dorjee' the majestic thunderbolt.

The unchallenged queen of the  Himalayas , Darjeeling always attracts people from all over the world. Darjeeling  located in eastern-himalaya is 80 kms from Siliguri town and takes approx 3 hrs to reach. But if someone wants to enjoy the real beauty of journey and has time in hand should take Toy Train ride from Siliguri. The toy train is popularly known as Darjeeling Himalayan Railways or DHR. The toy train approximately  takes  8 hrs to reach ( Guiness Railway Book referred to this train journey as one of the most spectacular in the world).  Anyone can experience the engineering excellence of the train route. The valleys, lush green forests and tea gardens never give you any chance to look into the other thing while traveling to Darjeeling from Siliguri and no one  feel boring  as the beauty of the road never provide any chance to do so. The omnipresence of mighty Kanchenjunga Peak ( 3rd highest peak in the world) is felt everywhere in this hill station. Some parts of Darjeeling can be visited by walking  and for the rests  to be by  vehicles. Toy Train Darjeeling

Who has the interest in Botany or simply want to see the variety of orchids, cactus or different kind of trees then Darjeeling botanical garden  or Lloyd Botanical Garden is the ideal place to visit.  Mahakal Temple or Darjeeling Observatory Hill and Shrubbery Park are also places to visit. 

Two major kinds of forests are present in Darjeeling Hills. Upto 6000 ft. is tropical & above from 6000 ft. upto 12,000 ft. is temperate. Darjeeling is a paradise for Bird Watchers. In Darjeeling Zoo anyone can see the one of the most endangered species of the world – Red Panda.Darjeeling weather resembles European nature. Darjeeling is always cold. Even in May-June, you require woolen clothing after the evening. Day time is comfortable. But from October onwards and up to March you require heavy woolen clothing.

  1. Early Morning Tiger Hill, Batasia Loop & Ghoom Monastery tour tarts around 4.00 am to 4.30 AM
  2. Rest of  the Darjeeling local sightseeing start around 9 AM In hills, vehicle movements are strictly restricted and parking in front of hotels are time bound. So it is requested to follow the time given for local sightseeing and transfers properly.
  3. There are 08 numbers of Joy Ride services in Darjeeling. Joy Ride tour covers Darjeeling – Ghoom – Darjeeling ( 14 Kms) route and takes almost two hours to complete . Joy ride starts  at 8 AM in the morning. Trains run by Diesel Engine and Steam Engine respectively.
  4. Darjeeling to Gangtok takes 4.30 to 5 Hrs.
  5. Darjeeling and Ropeway timings are 10 AM to 2 PM in season and 10 AM to 4 PM in off season.
  6. If Vehicle is to be kept waiting for Ropeway ridings in Darjeeling & Gangtok, then halting charge will be extra.
  7. HMI and ZOO are closed on Thursday. Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre is closed on Sunday.
  8. Gangtok local sightseeing starts 8.30 in the morning.For Tsongo Lake & Baba Mandir tour vehicle reports before or on 7.30 AM at hotel. If guests  can't catch the vehicle by that stipulated time, then they will have to go to stand on their own, because from 8 AM to Evening 7 PM vehicle movements are restricted. Only Luxury vehicles, ie. Innova / Scorpio/Xylo can operate after the before mentioned time
  9. Nathula Pass permit  issues by Indian Army on the very day of the journey depending on the border situation and road condition. If permit obtained then the extra cost, whatever is actual  to be paid in Gangtok before starting the journey.
  10. Nathula closes on Monday & Tuesday

Day 1

Bagdogra Airport / New Jalpaiguri Railway Station to Kalimpong

Welcome on arrival at IXB/NJP meet our representative and transfer to Kalimpong (75kms/03hrs). Another quiet hill station in Eastern Himalaya. Kalimpong is famous for its Orchids & Nurseries and some of the rarest cacti & Orchids can be seen. Oak, Maple and Chestnut stretch up the ridge as far as the eye can reach. Check in hotel rest & overnight at Hotel in Kalimpong.

Day 2

Kalimpong Half Day local sightseeing and transfer to Gangtok

Morning after breakfast followed half day Kalimpong local sightseeing covering Durpin Dhara, Zong Dong Palri Fo-Brong Monastery and flower & Orchid Nurseries Dr. Grahams Home, Delo View point and Kalimpong Market and drive to Gangtok [70 kms/ 3hrs] at an altitude of 5500ft Gangtok is the Capital of Sikkim is a beautiful and clean town promising of the best monasteries and landscapes. Evening free for individual activity and leisure.

Day 3

Gangtok local sightseeing

After Breakfast start for Gangtok local sightseeing , covering Hanuman Tak, Ganesh Tak, Tashi view Point ,Chortan, Stupa, Institute of Tibetology Institute of Handicrafts and handlooms along with Rumtek Monastery & Dharma Chakra Centre (24Kms/45Mins), the sect of the Kargyupa Sect – one of the four major Tibetan Buddhist Sect & finally Flower Show.

Day 4

Excursion Tour to Tsongo Lake ( Changu Lake) & Baba Mandir

After breakfast day tour to Tsomgo lake ( 12400ft) or Changu Lake, which is only 32 kms from Gangtok City, the oval shaped lake is almost about 1Km long, and 15 mtrs deep. The lake is considered sacred by the local people,After that visit 18 kms from the lake Baba Mandir, (temple of disappeared army personal) and back to Gangtok. Evening free at Gangtok for shopping and individual activity.

Day 5

Gangtok to Darjeeling

Morning after breakfast drive to Darjeeling (120kms/4hrs), once the summer capital of India, Darjeeling is a land of infinite variety and charm. It will cater you a mix-experience of lively nature charming Himalayan people. Surrounded by Tea gardens; this little town faces some of the highest peaks of the Himalayas. Take a rest and then a walk around town to appreciate the new culture you are in.

Day 6

Darjeeling best points local sightseeing

Early morning start for Tiger Hill to watch the spectacular sunrise and its amazing effects on the Mt. Kanchendzonga ( Worlds 3rd highest peak), Visit Ghoom Monastery and Batashia Loop War Memorial while returning to the Hotel. After breakfast followed by Half day best point local sightseeing covering Japanese Temple, Peace Pagoda, Padmaja N. Zoological Garden, Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Tibetan Refugee Self-help Center and Rock side. After that visit to the Mall (Chowrasta) along with local Market for City Life.

Departure for Further destination
